The spider is often found in summer and Autumn when it is searching to mate. The female spends her entire life in the funnel, emerging only to catch prey and to mate. The male dies soon after mating, but the female can live many years.
Sustained wet weather and indiscriminate use of insecticides often cause the spider to enter houses and hide in footwear and clothing. The male funnelweb's venom is 6 times as toxic as the female's.
First Aid: call 13 11 26 and if possible
capture the spider for identification.
