MONITORING SYSTEMS

Installation of Termite Monitoring Stations

The Australian Standard A.S.3660 -Termite Management advises that termites pose a significant economic risk to buildings and structures throughout the mainland Australia . Consequently regular monitoring of your property for termites activity is essential. In any given area it is normal for new termite colonies to be establishing or existing colonies to be seeking new food sources. They may eventually invade your property. For this reason we strongly recommend that you install termite monitoring stations around your property as an early warning system.

-  AUSTRAPEST'S Termite Bait Boxes (several types are available).

Installation of bait boxes in key areas where the termites are more likely to enter.

The aim is to attract termites in the bait box, dust them with Triflumuron or Arsenic trioxide and destroy the colony (C.S.I.R.O Dr. John French's Technique)

Boxes can be checked regularly by the customer and termites treated by an Austrapest Timber Pest Specialist if they enter bait.

-  Austrapest's Termitrol Monitoring system:

A low cost professional termite monitoring system designed to detect foraging termites before they infest a home or building.

Plastic pegs with timber interceptors inside.

Customer to inspect stations monthly and contact an Austrapest,s Timber Pest Specialist for further assessment/ treatment if active termites are found inside.

The same work can also be done with timbers pegs impregnated with starch.

-  Exterra Baiting System is also a Monitoring System and is comprehensively explained in Baiting Systems (our preferred option as it covers both monitoring and baiting).

-  Sentricon Baiting System.

Why we monitor

As part of our integrated approach, bait boxes and monitors are used

-  as part of an active dusting program (refer to section on dusting)

-  to monitor the progress of termite activity, where termites are most active , to determine the termite species present

-  to build up activity in order to make dusting more successful

-  as an early warning device to detect termites possibly before they have a chance to cause major structural damage to the building

-  in conjunction with either the traditional termite barrier treatment or the interception baiting programs such as Exterra. (refer to sections on barriers and Exterra )

How we monitor

Qualified and experienced Austrapest technicians may use a variety of methods and devices, which are placed strategically around a property for maximum benefit

-  Austrapest's termatrol monitors are a neat PVC system or timber stations which can be placed around the perimeter of the home.

They are useful as an early pick up before termites can gain access to the home

-  Austrapest monitoring pegs are versatile starch impregnated timber pegs with cork plugs which can be placed in a variety of areas of suspected activity.

The ingress of temites can be checked regularly with minimal disturbance. If termites sense danger they

will go underground and may only surface again after they have done major structural damage.

AUSTRAPEST'S TERMITE BAIT BOXES

Many people are using the termite bait box technique as one tool in the control of termite attack.

-  Bait boxes may be one alternative when the structure of a building allows no physical access to treat active termites.

-  Bait boxes can be used by people who are reluctant to use traditional chemical control methods and can't quite afford a baiting system or to pull their building down and rebuild to discourage termite attack.

They are made from foam broccoli boxes - with layers of corrugated cardboard and pine slates.

They are also impregnated with a Berley consisting mostly of starch.

The idea of a bait is to attract the termites which are known to be in close vicinity. When enough activity has built up then a qualified and licenced Pest Controller dusts the termites with Arsenic Trioxide or Triflumuron.

Boxes can be checked regularly by the customer (free) or by an Austrapest licenced Pest Manager.

Limitations to monitoring and baiting systems

- It is important to note that unlike some traditional treatments which can be guaranteed, there is no warranty applicable to this method. It requires time to allow build up of termites in the boxes, and constant monitoring of the building.

- Further structural damage may occur during the time it takes for termites to enter the baits. This risk is understood by clients.

- Monitoring and baiting systems require some commitment on the part of the home owner to continue with regular check ups. It may not always be convenient if a person does not live on site, or if more immediate results are needed eg in the case of selling or renovating.

For long term control of termites AUSTRAPEST prefers to recommend exterra interception and baiting system or traditional chemical barriers treatments.
